Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump is blaming Family Research Council president Tony Perkins for the fact that he quoted a Bible verse as "two Corinthians" instead of "Second Corinthians" in a recent speech given at Liberty University.

The mistake drew laughter from the largely Christian audience in attendance at the speech. The error raised questions among some concerning Trump's biblical knowledge.

"Tony Perkins wrote that out for me -- he actually wrote out 2, he wrote out the number 2 Corinthians," Trump said in an interview with CNN's Don Lemon. "I took exactly what Tony said, and I said, 'Well, Tony has to know better than anybody.'"

Indeed, the Biblical passage is supposed to be written out as "2 Corinthians." However it is traditionally pronounced as "Second Corinthians" when adapted to spoken word.

Trump's excuse comes as he is making an effort to appeal to evangelical voters in the lead-up to the Iowa caucuses.
