In response to president-elect Donald Trump’s tweet that there should be consequences for flag burning, a group of protesters showed up in front of Trump Tower Tuesday night and set American flags ablaze.
The video shows a group of protesters pouring either alcohol or igniter fluid on the flags and then proceeding to light them on fire.
The protesters were members of the Alt-Left NYC Revolution Club, a socialist group that encourages people to protest not only Trump, but the entire system of democracy.
The woman who posted the video, Sunsara Taylor, shouted over a megaphone that the U.S. flag "deserves to be burned."
She tweeted on Wednesday 10 reasons why she believes the U.S. flag deserves to burn, including the nation’s history of slavery and the U.S. war on terror.
Flag burning protests such as the one on Veterans Day at Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass., have sparked national debate over respect for the American flag.
Trump tweeted on Tuesday that he believes people who burn the American flag should face either jail time or loss of citizenship.
Flag burning is protected by the First Amendment, twice affirmed by the Supreme Court in “Texas v. Johnson” (1989) and “United States v. Eichman” (1990).
