Sadly this story is true. A group of Democratic lawmakers in Colorado voted against a measure that would increase penalties for indecent exposure in view of a minor, because some fear it would be used to "ban" drag shows.

Colorado state Rep. Leslie Herod (D) took to the floor on Saturday to argue against the measure.

“ I do not believe, in fact, that this part of the conversation has been vetted properly, “ Herod said. “But this is a part  - and this is a bill that has been shopped around the country, particularly targeting the transgender community.”

“These types of laws have been used to ban drag shows. To target individuals who use the restroom of the sex that they identify with  - a public restroom. To charge them with felony charges.

I am very concerned about the attacks against the transgender community that are happening across the country.”

Protecting minors now equals targeting transgenders in the minds of some leftists.

The official summary of  HB 23-1135 describes the increase in charges:

Under current law, indecent exposure is a class 1 misdemeanor; except that it is a class 6 felony for a third or subsequent offense. The bill makes indecent exposure a class 6 felony if committed in view of a person who is under 18 years of age. when the person who commits indecent exposure knew there was a child under 15 years of age in view of the act and the person is more than 18 years of age and more than 4 years older than the child.

The Republican majority passed the measure unanimously and it is now before the Colorado state senate.

27 Democrats voted against the measure.
