During the press briefing Tuesday afternoon, White House spokesman Josh Earnest discussed the present threat against schools in Los Angeles, Calif., which were closed after the school system received word of an online threat early on Tuesday.

Earnest said that, ultimately, local law enforcement are “responsible for taking the lead” in these types of situations.

“Ultimately, it’s local first responders who are responsible for taking the lead in protecting their communities,” said Earnest. “After all, these professionals are most aware of the unique characteristics of their community.”

“This is true when there’s natural disaster,” he went on. “This is also true when talking about strengthening relationships between local communities and local law enforcement. The role of the federal government is to support those conversations where necessary."

The White House spokesman noted that the FBI is offering its "support and assistance" to local law enforcement officials in the Los Angeles schools terror threat investigation.

He added that the White House supports the Los Angeles Unified School District in its decision to close the city’s schools while the threat is being examined.

A similar threat was made on schools in New York City on Tuesday, which local authorities ultimately deemed not credible. The threat is currently being investigated as a hoax.

The city of Los Angeles may be taking extra precautions given the recent terror attack in San Bernardino, just over an hour away driving distance.
