In a tale of ultimate irony, new guidelines for the popular game show Jeopardy! state that Canadians can no longer be contestants.
The news the contestants can no longer be from “the Great White North” must come as somewhat of a shock to the host of the show, Alex Trebek.
After all, Trebek is from Canada!
Jeopardy! spokesperson Alison Shapiro told the Toronto Star in an e-mail, “As international laws governing how information is shared over the internet are ever-changing and complex, we are currently investigating how we can accept registrations from potential Canadian contestants.”
Trebek and the show’s producers could not pinpoint the exact issue with Canadian privacy laws that prevent Canadians from applying and participating in the show.
However, in 2014 Canada enforced anti-spam legislation that prevents companies and organizations from emailing with their “expressed or implied permission.” The penalties for violating this legislation in Canada are severe.
