This past weekend, ESPN became the Worldwide Leader in Employee Layoffs.

Due to budgeting concerns, the sports media company had to cut over 100 employees, including 20 popular on-air commentators. It seems that the company’s love affair with being a megaphone for progressive causes has started to impact its bottom line, and its employees are paying the price.

The list of personalities that were cut mostly included NFL and NBA-related anchors and reporters. The casualties include:

NFL Draft expert Tom McShay

“NFL Countdown” analyst Matt Hasselbeck

NBA color commentator Jeff Van Gundy

NBA analyst Jalen Rose

Major League Baseball reporter Joon Lee

Talk show host Max Kellerman

ESPN must be dire in dire straits if it’s having to say goodbye to some of its most recognizable employees.

ESPN said that it was thinning the herd because it is not in the best financial position and was hoping to meet fiscal goals for this year. These cuts are also separate from the 7,000 other employees that its parent company, Disney, had to lay off.

“Given the current environment, ESPN has determined it necessary to identify some additional cost savings in the area of public-facing commentator salaries,” ESPN said in a statement.

While CNN made the point that Disney’s operating profit grew 56 percent last year, it failed to mention that ESPN’s has barely helped that cause, as ESPN’s profit margins have been declining sharply for the past several months.
