541,000 Illegals Given Social Security Numbers, Access to Costly Benefits, Under DACA

Ben Graham | April 15, 2015

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) wrote to Acting Social Security Commissioner Carolyn W. Colvin and asked her how many illegal immigrants have been granted Social Security numbers under the Obama administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy.

That number? Try 541,000 since 2012.

Colvin writes:

"By the end of fiscal year (FY) 2014, we had issued approximately 541,000 original SSNs to individuals authorized to work under the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy since its inception. We do not maintain date on the number of individuals in this program who applied but were not issued SSNs under this policy."

More than half of a million people that came to the U.S. illegally now have access to costly, taxpayer-funded benefits.

Think about it: these are 541,000 people that are sucking up benefits from programs that are already going bankrupt. There were nearly 11 million people on disability in May 2014, and those people were individually granted, on average, $1,000 per month. The Disability Insurance Trust Fund, provider of benefits to disabled workers and their families, is already set to run out by 2016 unless changes are made. What kind of help can anyone expect to receive when the well runs dry?

Sen. Sessions warns that every one of these individuals will be able to draw federal tax credits, SS retirement benefits, and SS disability benefits. A single low-income illegal immigrant, who would have no net tax liability, could be eligible to receive up to $3 in SS benefits for every $1 paid in, and could even get up to 35K in tax credits for their household in a single year including all back credits.
