Colleges Offers 8th Grader Football Scholarship

Florida State University has offered scholarships to a young quarterback who hasn’t even started high school yet.

Drew Pyne is a 15-year-old who stands at 6'1" and weighs in at 170 pounds. So far, he has received scholarships from two schools, including Florida State University and South Alabama University. Other schools are expected to make similar offers soon.

So far, Pyne’s career has been limited to Pop Warner football, which is the football equivalent of Little League baseball. Last year, he led his Pop Warner football team to the national championships in Orlando, where it lost in the national semifinals.

While it’s extremely rare for any athlete to be actively pursued by college athletic departments prior to high school, this is not the first time that FSU has made efforts to entice middle school players to their institute of higher learning. The Seminoles offered Jacksonville Trinity Christian safety Tyreke Johnson when he was a seventh grader.

Despite the offer, there is no guarantee that Pyne will choose to matriculate at FSU and even if he did, a high school injury or poor SAT scores could put a damper on his gridiron dreams.

That being said, the likelihood is that sports fans will be hearing Drew Pyne’s name on a regular basis, four or five years from now.
