New York City Mayor Eric Adams sent migrants from his city across the country—and the
globe—after criticizing Republican governors for busing migrants to different states.

According to documents obtained by Politico, New York City spent approximately $50,000
of taxpayer money to send 114 migrant households to cities in the US and in other countries between April of 2022 and April of 2023.

The most popular destinations were Florida and Texas, with 28 families and 14 families going to each state respectively, but some ended up as far away as South America and China.

Adams has previously publicly condemned Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas and Gov. Ron DeSantis
of Florida for busing migrants who arrive at their states’ border towns to self-described
“sanctuary” locations, often in Democratically-controlled cities.

In May, Adams accused Abbott of specifically targeting “Black-run cities” and called his actions “morally bankrupt.” In response to the news of NYC’s own program to send asylum-seekers elsewhere, Abbott spokesperson Andrew Mahaleris criticized Adams’ “hypocritical charades.”

“Less than three weeks ago, Mayor Adams said busing migrants is ‘morally bankrupt.’ Where is
all the outrage and condemnation from the White House and Democrats for one of their own
sending migrants out of town, out of state, and even out of the country?” Mahaleris said in a statement to Politico.

“Instead of these hypocritical charades, Mayor Adams needs to call on President Biden and Congress to step up and do their jobs to secure the southern border.”

Adams’ office denies the similarity between his actions and the actions of the Republican
governors he has condemned, claiming that migrants who were resettled wanted to leave New
York City and accused other programs of forcing or coercing migrants to leave.

“We are not coercing people to leave, we are not suggesting or recommending locations, and we
are not presenting any kind of false choice. We are helping people who want to reconnect with
loved ones or communities do so,” mayoral spokesperson Kate Smart said in a statement.

These resettlements occurred through New York City’s Project Reconnect which launched last
fall. The program exists separately from similar initiatives run by nonprofits and helps asylum-
seekers relocate if they want to be someplace other than NYC.

Adams has previously condemned the Biden administration for its “irresponsibility” in failing to
address the immigration crisis of his city.
