The new year has ushered in a new California law allowing criminal suspects to have their choice of pronoun released with their mugshot.

The mugshot may not be up on social media for long however, as California's AB 994 only allows the mugshots of suspects with violent charges to remain on social media for 14 days.

According to the law:

With respect to an individual who has been arrested for any crime, this bill would require a police department or sheriff’s office, upon posting a booking photo on social media, to use the name and pronouns given by the individual arrested  The bill would authorize a police department or sheriff’s office to use other legal names or known aliases of an individual in limited specified circumstances exist. Because the bill would impose higher duties on local law enforcement, it would impose a state-mandated local program.

If it should take longer than two weeks to locate a suspect who may be using a different name and identifying as a different gender then their biological sex, then the photo would be allowed to remain on social media for a longer period.

How much of a longer period it can remain posted may be as debatable as preferred pronouns of the suspect.
