Rep.: ATF Director's Resignation 'Proof that ATF Should be Eliminated'

Ben Graham | March 23, 2015

ATF Director B. Todd Jones has tendered his resignation in the wake of an outcry from Second Amendment supporters over the ATF's now-failed “backdoor” bid for gun control in which it tried to ban ammunition.

One Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) has used the resignation as tinder, putting out a fiery statement that calls for the utter elimination of the ATF:

“It is difficult to lead an agency that lacks a clear mission. The ATF is largely duplicative and beset by scandal and controversy, including its recent attempt to ban certain ammunition. The resignation of Director Jones is further proof that the ATF should be eliminated. The Justice Department will be more effective and efficient once the ATF is absorbed by other more capable agencies.”

For once, there’s bipartisan agreement as Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) is just as unhappy with the ATF. In a press statement, he ruthlessly attacks the ATF, calling them “reckless cowards” for backing down:

“The ATF’s decision to cave to the gun lobby and allow life threatening armor-piercing bullets to remain on the streets is not only reckless, but cowardly,”

Though, even in the face of thousands of citizens' voices, he still refuses to admit demonstrable defeat. He continues to assume to know better than the people he represents, calling his brand of anti-second amendment legislation “common sense”: "Congress must pass common-sense gun safety laws to protect lives and keep our men and women in uniform safe.”
