Opening his September 8, 2004 CBS Evening News, anchor Dan Rather breathlessly touted how "CBS News has exclusive information, including documents, that now sheds new light on the President's [National Guard] service record...."
Over the next ten days, while Rather stubbornly stuck to his story, it became obvious that the documents were crude forgeries; soon after the November election, CBS announced that Rather would be stepping down as anchor after 24 years.
